Bulk wine exports of Argentina closed the year with a positive balance

During 2024, bulk wine exports represented 25% of the volume (liters) and 7.3% of the turnover (USD) of all wines exported of Argentina, according to a special report released this week by the Argentine Bulk Wine Chamber.

Bulk wine exports reached 52.6 million liters, representing a year-on-year increase of 13.7%, and a value of 52.5 million dollars, an increase of 11.9% compared to 2023.

Varietal wines have maintained their majority share in external sales, totaling 46.3 million liters, representing 88% of the total volume exported in bulk.

In this category of wines, Malbec continued to be the most exported varietal, with 40.5 million liters, representing 87.5% of the total segment. It is worth noting that during 2024, an additional 4.4 million liters of Malbec were exported (+12.1%). Cabernet Sauvignon was the second varietal with the highest increase in sales, adding 400 thousand additional liters (+53%).

Bulk wine exports originated mainly in Mendoza, responsible for 95% of the total volume, followed by La Rioja (2.6%) and San Juan (2.4%).

It is important to note that, in 2024, in addition to Malbec, only 2 varietals experienced growth in their volumes shipped abroad, Cabernet Sauvignon (+53%) and Bonarda (+18%). In the case of generic wines, they experienced an increase of 50.7%, with generic white wines being the most dynamic, with an increase of 290% (+1.6 million liters).

Exports were made to 21 countries. The main destinations were: United Kingdom (66.3%), United States (9.5%) and Germany (5.7%).

The markets with the highest volume increase were: the United Kingdom, to which 3.7 million more liters were sent than during 2023, to Canada 1.7 million more liters were exported and to the United States 700 thousand additional liters.

The average selling price was 1.00 USD/liter for all bulk exports. While for the Varietal segment it was 1.07 USD/liter and for generic wines 0.44 USD/liter.

Regarding the 2024 export results in bulk format, the president of the Argentine Bulk Wine Chamber, José Bartolucci, stated: “The increase in exports is mainly due to the recovery of white and red generic wine businesses, agreements that in 2023 practically did not exist”.

He also stated that sales of varietal wines have been consolidated, especially the flagship variety, Malbec, as the numbers show.

With a good harvest, greater business opportunities are expected for 2025 with a more stable macroeconomy. “A first step, of great importance for the normalization of foreign trade businesses,” said Bartolucci.
